Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a disease associated with ageing. It is characterised by visual impairment due to damage to the retina. It can also lead to blindness. In developed countries, AMD is the most common type of vision loss.

A recent study carried out by a team of scientists from the University of Southampton has shown a strong association between AMD and the SERPING1 gene. From their findings, these scientists inferred that a SNP variant of the SERPING1 gene (rs2511989) significantly altered susceptibility to AMD.

They believe that an increased understanding of the genetics behind age-related macular degeneration would help predict those at risk, and ultimately lead to better treatment.
